VIDEO: 'Friendly' Prayut pats journalist's head
A video of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha patting a journalist's head and rubbing his ear while giving an interview in Khon Kaen on Wednesday has sparked widespread criticism on social media. The video was uploaded on the Facebook page of Bangkok Post military affairs reporter Wassana Nanuam.
In Thai culture, it is highly inappropriate and bad manners to pat or touch anyone's head, which is considered the most honourable part of the body.
Netizens wrote that it was ill-mannered for Gen Prayut to play with the journalist's head as he was holding a microphone and kneeling. It was also strange that it was done in public and no one told him to stop.
Deputy government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the premier "had no bad intentions and was only being playful with a member of the media".
