Burma Human Rights Campaigner to Arrive in Canada Canadian Friends of Burma Ottawa (October 20, 09) – Young Burma’s human rights campaigner Zoya Phan is to arrive in Ottawa to participate in the Writers Festival on Oct. 24. She will talk about “the Struggle for Freedom in Burma,” along with Canadian author Karen Connelly. They both recently authored two books: “Little Daughter” by Zoya Phan and “Burma Lessons” by Karen Connelly. Please see detailed event info at http://www.writersfestival. Zoya Phan, a campaign coordinator for Burma Campaign UK, will also attend a number of Burma events in Ottawa, Toronto and London (Ont.) from October 24 to 30. Zoya Phan was born in the remote jungles of Burma to the Karen tribe. At age 13, her peaceful childhood was shattered when the Burmese army attacked. She found shelter at a Thai refugee camp, where she stayed until 2005. Then she came to the U.K. and claimed asylum. There she became the public face of the Burmese people's fight for freedom. She is also the youngest special guest speakers to UK Conservatives Party Convention in 2006 and 2007. Please see her speeches.
